Living With Diabetes and Exercising



Exercise plays a vital role in regulating the blood sugar level in all type of diabetes. The diabetics naturally are interested to know the type of exercise they should undertake which is less risky and at the same time contains wonderful ability to control the blood sugar level. The exercises can be classified as:

• Aerobics
• Anaerobic
• Stretching exercises

Aerobic Exercise
The requirement of aerobic exercise is the increased quantity of oxygen for a longer period of time. This is of great benefit for circulatory and respiratory system of the body. The aerobic exercise involves extended and recurring use of the muscles of the body. This prolonged use increases the body’s requirement of oxygen. The examples of aerobic exercise are swimming, cycling, jogging, and skipping. These exercises greatly help to improve the fitness of heart, therefore these are strongly recommended for diabetics

Anaerobic Exercise
Exercises which are of short period are termed anaerobic exercise. They give strength to muscles of the body but do not contribute a lot to the health of cardiovascular system. The examples of these exercises are weight lifting and sprinting. These exercises are over the limits and boundaries of diabetics as some risks are involved in it.

Stretching Exercises
These exercises are designed to make the joints of the body more strong and to develop the flexibility. The prime example of stretching exercise is yoga. These exercises are helpful in warming up or getting the body ready for more strenuous exercise. These exercises can be carried upon by the diabetics as it helps to make the muscles and the joints of the body stronger. These stretching exercises also help to cool down at the end of some tough exercise.

All the above mentioned exercise improves the glucose sugar levels by increasing the insulin sensitivity. These also give a feeling of a step towards better health. The diabetics are free to select any exercise out of the above excluding the anaerobic. Still the best for diabetics are walking, jogging and in some cases cycling as well. These aerobic exercises can be followed up by the stretching exercises at the start and the end of aerobic activity. This ensures that the heart rate rise up and falls down at the steady rate.
