Holiday Tips for Diabetics



The holiday season is coming. Most of us are looking forward to the celebration that, this month will bring for us. There is no surprise in it that holidays are mostly centered on tasty and yummy foods. This yummy food makes the people to gain more weight than normal. The diabetics of course face an equal issue with their blood sugar values. In order to celebrate we eat and drink with our family members and friends. We do this with an intention to make the holiday a happier time for us. Unfortunately if the sugar levels are constantly higher in the blood stream, it can make the person to feel moody and lethargic. Both of these factors are not in the favor of enjoying the joyful time of the year.

Here are some of the tips if followed properly will help the diabetics to enjoy the holiday season without putting on any extra weight and certainly without mismanaging the blood sugar levels.

• Before sitting down to eat the cuisine, think properly before eating about the good foods and the bad foods for the diabetics.
• Try to be consistent while taking carbohydrates during all snack timings. If you really want to eat chocolate ice-cream or a sweat pie, then better replace it with the bread and potato. Or another option is to have a moderate quantity of ice-cream, bread and potato.
• Better start with vegetables and salad. Use them as filler in addition to all starches which you are going to eat in the meal
• Better go for a walk between two meals to increase the metabolism and to bring down his blood sugar level.
• Better before taking a full meal go for a long walk. This will really help in stabilizing the blood sugar level.
• Monitor the blood sugar regularly. The preferred times are before meal and then 2 hours after meal. This will assist to understand the effects of different foods on the blood sugar and will help to make better choices of food in the remaining holiday.
• Take full control on the portion sizes of the food. Palm size is of great help here.
• Eat slowly. This will allow the body to savor the flavors. Keep in mind that body requires around twenty minutes realizing the full taste.
• Better plan your food in advance. Once you smell the cooked food it becomes difficult to stay away from it.

By following the above mentioned tips you can safely enjoy the holidays without playing with the blood sugar level and weight.
