Health Problems Living With Diabetes

Diabetes is a common condition and is being widely spread all around the world. Diabetes if left untreated can cause serious health complications. Approximately 7 % of the total population in America is suffering from diabetes.

We all well understand that in diabetes the level of glucose shoots up in the urine and blood of the person. The reason of this increased level of glucose in blood and urine is insufficiency of insulin. Insulin is the hormone that aids the entrance of glucose in the body cells. This mainly takes place when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin or due to several antibodies that are produced within the blood, hinders the proper functioning of this hormone. In both the cases the result is the higher level of glucose in the bloodstream.

The initial symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination (polyuria) and excessive thirst (polydipsia). Diabetes if properly treated can be effectively managed. But if left untreated may invite many other serious health related problems. Some are mentioned below

• Untreated diabetes may cause inflammation of the penis in males and itching of the vulva in females
• Despite of increase in appetite the diabetics may still lose weight
• Diabetics may suffer from various infections e.g. tuberculosis and kidney infections
• Diabetics may suffer from retinal detachments and in some cases the loss of vision.
• Diabetics may also develop feet infection, if not checked at early stage may cause amputation.
• The skin infections of diabetics also do not heal quickly
• The diabetic women may give birth to still born or overweight children
• Diabetes can also suffer from arthritis
• Diabetes may also cause amenorrhea (period stop) in women.

In order to avoid complications of diabetes, the best thing is to control the blood sugar levels. Though I understand it is easier said than done. But still stabilization in blood sugar levels can be achieved by proper control on the diet. The diabetics should cut down the intake of simple carbohydrates. The prime example of such simple carbohydrate is table sugar. Change in diet will bring the sugar level down to an extent. To bring it further down the best idea is to increase the physical activity. This does not necessarily means that all diabetics have to go to gym to control the sugar levels rather it means that they should incorporate any activity to increase the calorie burning.

Diabetics should check the sugar levels regularly, if they are still high it is better to take some medicine for the time being. Go on striving hard to defeat the disease without medicine. If you supplement your efforts with a good control on diet and increased physical activity you’ll be able to cut down the intake of medicine and in most of the cases completely stop it.
