Can Surgery Treat Diabetes?

Diabetes is a common condition and is being widely spread all around the world. Diabetes if left untreated can cause serious health complications. Approximately 7 % of the total population in America is suffering from diabetes.

There are two different inherent causes of diabetes which causes two different types of diabetes. If there is an insufficiency of insulin, which is caused because of the lack of islets cells in the body, it causes type 1 diabetes. These islets cells are responsible for producing insulin. There is another case where the problem is not the production or the insufficiency of insulin rather the problem is using the provided insulin properly. If the body cells do not respond properly to the insulin present in the body, it causes type 2 diabetes.

Mostly the insulin injections and other prescriptive medicines are used to maintain the stable blood glucose levels. The proper diet and the regular exercise play an equally important role in reducing the glucose levels and the fat cells thus controlling diabetes. The diet and exercise also helps in controlling the diabetic symptoms and complications.

Scientists have proven the correlation between obesity and diabetes. This is the reason that weight loss is considered the major diabetic treatment. Various methods are being opted for weight loss to control diabetes. But the one that gives guaranteed results in reversing diabetes are the surgeries. Today many diabetic patients are treated with the surgeries for weight loss for the treatment of their diabetes. It is thought that this is one more instrument to lower down the chances of the onset of diabetes. These weight loss surgeries are helpful in lowering down the risk factor of type 2 diabetes. It has been seen the sufferers who experience the weight loss surgery have the 5 folds more likeliness to keep the diabetes away for the next 2 years compared to the one who use general medications to control their condition.

There are two kinds of weight loss surgeries.

• Lap band
• Gastric bypass

Initially it was thought that gastric bypass is more effective than the lap band surgery for the treatment of diabetes. The doctors were of the belief that lap band surgery brings about certain changes in the hormones, when the stomach is being stapled. This makes it less effective than gastric bypass for the treatment of diabetes.

After some time lap band surgery proved to be equally beneficial for the treatment as that of gastric bypass. In the process of lap band surgery the upper section of the stomach is tied up with the assistance of a band made of silicone. In contrast during the process of gastric bypass surgery the different strategy is adopted. The stomach is divided into two parts by fastening a silicone band to make it smaller.

Around 85 % of type 2 diabetic American are opting gastric bypass surgery for their treatment. The ratio of the people dying during this gastric bypass surgery is 5 in 1000 while the rate is far less for the lap band surgery which is one in each 2000. The later one has lesser side effects and is comparatively safer than the former one.

Normally diabetics like to go for the diabetic medications and the insulin shots. Still it is not evident that whether the diet change and the exercise will bring the required results. But the surgeries diminish the requirement of oral medications, insulin shot and exercise.
